Swimming Question of the Week - Swimmers - November 3, 2010

Posted by Glenn Mills on Nov 03, 2010 08:01AM (2,408 views)

A quick question for the swimmers, and do your best to think about it... I'm sure it was a LONG time ago.

Swimmers - Who was the coach or teacher who was MOST responsible for the technique that you have/had?

Wow. Thanks for making me think abou this one. I guess is would have to be my age group coaches from when I lived in Alabama. Thank you Jack and Johnny Barnacastle from Birminghas Swim League.

I know I've written this on the site somewhere else... but I put this question up on purpose today. My oldest brother Kevin was the most responsible for me having the technique that moved me forward in the sport. He taught me a better way to swim before I started to grow, so that when I did, the stroke was good. Without his teaching me at such a young age... I would have probably been a very average swimmer.

Happy Birthday KJ and thanks. Love you!

For my kids, 2 people, their first teacher (Claire Griffiths) and their second coach (Kevin Ayers). Both insistent on technique over speed to begin with. For me, Claire again, as she taught me at 37, but then the videos from the late, lamented Richard Quick

Ray and Zada Taft, and the San Mateo Aquatic Club- for all those Master swimmers out there-you'll recognize the name. They were the best!

The most depends when and where in my swimming life. I learned to swim by my father throwing me off dock into water at about 5 years old, not good. So I begin by crediting my survival instinct. Then I just began swimming on my own, across the creek and back many times. Then making the high school swim team, at which point I had my first swim coach, water polo Olympian Bill Zimmer. Then getting a college swimming/academic scholarship and coach Bill Klarner. Returning to competitive swimming this year at age 67, coaches Rachel Stratton-Mills, Glen Mills, and Adam Friedman. Each of my swim coaches has been outstanding. I have learned much from each. Thank you, coaches.

Person responsible for my freestyle technique would be Mike Arata, for my IM and Backstroke would be my college coach Frank Busch! Hey Glenn I know old posts but better late than never, I always show up to the party at the last minute, remember Trials in '88 qualified for the meet the very last day you could, albeit had to swim the darn thing twice that day!
